Libya's Treasures All Gone ?

Iason Athanasiadis wrote the following articul for The Christian Science Monitor all about how Leptius Magna and other Libyan  treasures are being looted red handed . Libyan bloggers have made note of this tragedy happening in Libya for years now , and yet it still occurs today , sad to say .

AL KHUMS, LIBYA – Libya has some of the world’s most extraordinary Roman antiquities, yet negligence and understaffed antiquities boards have resulted in ancient cities choked with rubbish and plagued by looting.
“The museums are in wretched shape,” said Donald White, an archaeologist who has excavated in Libya’s Cyrenaica region since the 1960s. “The sites need lots of remedial work to get them up and running.”
When Mr. White last visited a site, he came across a local man smoking a cigarette with one hand and hacking a marble head off with the other. Bystanders were unruffled by White’s outrage. They informed him that the man was a regular who maintained parallel amateur excavations on several holes around the site.
“All the statues we had excavated from the sanctuary of Demeter and Persephone were on the field unguarded, being looted regularly, or in poorly secured storerooms,” another archaeologist added.
Deep in the Sahara, the prehistoric rock carvings of Wadi Metkhandoush are under threat by the vibrations pulsing out from nearby oil drilling. That is when entrepreneurial locals are not removing them haphazardly to sell them to tourists.
Stolen treasures are spirited across the Egyptian border to Cairo or across the Mediterranean in small boats used to ferry Africans illegally to Italy.
Once in Europe, they find their way to the secretive chain of luxury dealers and high-end auction houses stretching from Basel to London and New York. Dealers forge source documents and sell them to museums and private collectors.

Scary Coffin Story !

BUMP...

BUMP...

BUMP...

Walking faster, he looks back and through the fog he makes out the image of an upright casket banging its way down the middle of the street toward him.

BUMP...

BUMP...

BUMP...

Terrified, the man begins to run toward his home, the casket bouncing quickly behind him.

FASTER...

FASTER...

BUMP..

BUMP...

BUMP....

He runs up to his door, fumbles with his keys, opens the door, rushes in, slams and locks the door behind him. However, the casket crashes through his door, with the lid of the casket clapping.

clappity-BUMP...

clappity-BUMP..

clappity-BUMP...

on his heels, as the terrified man runs.

Rushing upstairs to the bathroom, he locks himself in. His heart is pounding; his head is reeling; his breath is coming in sobbing gasps.

With a loud CRASH the casket breaks down the door.

Bumping and clapping toward him.

The man screams and reaches for something, anything, but all he can find is a bottle of cough syrup
! Desperate, he throws the cough syrup at the casket...

and,

(hopefully you're ready for this!!!)

The coffin stops.

Happy Halloween Babycakes !

Jokes From The Land Of The Flu

Things here are still basically the same in the Land Of The Flu . Moe and I are struggling to keep things up around the Condo . We had to call in reinforcements this week to help us out with the shopping , our son . That turned into a wonderful bonus because not only did he do the shopping for me , but then he cook a huge pot of chicken soup with all sorts if yummy veggies in it . I haven't had to cook for several days now and it sure was a big help.

Our son has always enjoyed cooking . He had his own cook book when he was just a little guy . He would always want to help out in the kitchen when I cooked ,as a little boy . The rule was , when you were tall enough to be able to look into the tallest pot sitting on the stove , then you could do some actual cooking over the fire ... with supervision of course .

Moe used to take the kids with him to work, to one of our restaurants in Houston, once in a while . They would come home with all sorts of adventures to share with me . They had learned how to peel garlic , or almost got locked up in the wine cellar, or the chief threatened to cut their ears off if they didn't stop nagging him for shrimp ,or in our youngest ones case , lime sherbet ! They were spoiled rotten by all the staff .

The best part was they learned to enjoy all sorts of new foods that most childern their ages never tasted . They LOVED escargot , frog leggs , and Beef Wellinton . They had to be on their best behavior and were taught wonderful table manners so we could take them into any resturante and not annoy the other patrons dinnig there also . They loved these experences and it has helped them later in other life situations .

Now to change the conversation ...... I got this in a email today and liked it . Thought you might like it too . Have a great day !

Adventures Of Having The Flu

I think I mentioned in a previous post recently that Moe and I had the flu . We still have the flu . I am getting pretty sick and tired of being sick and tired with this flu !!! All I do is cough , blow my nose ,moan and groan .

I now have laryngitis and can't talk . I have been reduced to talking in sign language with Moe and that is pretty funny sometimes ! Like when my friends call to talk to me , instead of telling them I can't talk because I have lost my voice , he simply tells them I can't talk . Well , to him it is all the same thing , but to them , they probably think I don't WANT to talk to them . Do you see the difference ?

Anyway ..... now that he has come down with a much milder form of the flu than me , he seems to think he has cornered the market on dieing !I never knew a man could moan and groan so much!
All last week when I was sicker than he is now , he wanted me to take him into town and when I begged off because I was running a fever and couldn't stand up , he would get mad at me . Now he is suffering from a sore throat , he thinks he is dieing ! When I reminded him of last week and the way he treated me when I was so sick , he looks at me like I've lost my mind .

We both are on antibiotics and they are helping a lot . When I 1st came down with this flu , I would try to sleep and couldn't no matter how badly I wanted to . Just the last few days have I been able to sleep more than an hour or two at a time . How nice it is to sleep restfully or as restfully as it is possible when you are coughing all the time . We are drinking lots of fluids and just take things as they come . One good thing about this flu for me is nothing taste good , not even chocolate , so am losing weight . And of course Moe is thrilled over the sound of silence in the house .Now that you are thoroughly bored out of your minds by this terrible blow by blow detailed account of our flu adventures , I will say bye for now . Stay well , OTE
